SINES: A Pop Duo Perform Together Across the Ocean

The synth pop duo speak about their new album 'Gravity' and collaborating across the world.

Singer/Songwriter Kitty Richardson is based in England while producer and composer Jason Wann lives and works in Portland, Oregon. This doesn’t stop the duo from performing together though as the Synth Pop Duo known as SINES.

In fact, they have never even met. And they’ve just released their album titled “Gravity” in early September.

The artists met in 2021 through a website called Vocalizr. They both agree that it was an instant attraction musically speaking. “When Kitty sent back the first demo for the first song we did, I was absolutely gobsmacked and knew that I had to work with her in a larger scope. After that, we began work on what would become “Gravity” fairly immediately,” Wann says.

Richardson couldn’t agree more. “I had been working with a bunch of different producers through vocalizr but my collaboration with Jason immediately felt different. That first song we worked on, “Something in the Way,” is still a favorite of ours,” she says.

Working together, they are confident that their individual strengths, when brought together, create powerful music the other wouldn’t be able to do alone. Wann says,” Kitty is a proper musician whereas I’m self taught and we approach songwriting quite differently. I think our greatest strength is that we’re not really precious about ego and try to do what’s right for the song. I think we both push the other into unfamiliar territory at times and because of the trust we have, we’ll explore some wacky ideas.”

As for Richardson, she adds, “I’ve never been able to produce, and I’ve been trying for over 10 years… It’s amazing when Jason brings a simple idea I have to life. And when he sends me tracks to write a topline over, it often conjures up something I never would have thought of without his chord choices.”

It took SINES two full years to complete “Gravity.” They note that it’s a concept album from the perspective of a wayward space explorer returned to Earth in 2023 after being lost amidst the dimensions. It’s a comment on modern society from an outsider’s perspective, and Richardson says there’s even more to it than meets the ear.

For me, the most exciting thing about Gravity is the fact that the whole “spaceman lost in space and then returning to earth” story is a perfect allegory for my experience with autism and trying to navigate the neurotypical world. I think my main goal for my music is to communicate to others a feeling that I’m unable to express using only words.” Richardson explained.

With a solid, collaborative pairing, “Gravity” is truly a solid, collaborative album which features a multitude of styles.

The musicians couldn’t be more proud of the album and they look forward to their future together as a duo. “For me, it’s a massive achievement. I’ve never worked on something of this scale before. The art, the videos, the concept, time it took, etc. It took us two years to make this record and do all the videos and whatnot. It was a huge undertaking and I’m so very proud of how it turned out,” says Wann.

He adds, “As for us as a duo, I think it’s quite an opening statement and it’s a chance for us to build something together that’s greater than our own individual talents as partners and writers. I’m so thrilled for the next chapter(s).”

In fact, the very next chapter is very soon. SINES is currently working on their next album, “Teenage Fantasy,” which they hope to release in 2024.
